How to convert Shimano 7 speed freewheel to single speed?
I have a Schwinn Katana with a Shimano 7 speed freewheel and would like to switch to a single speed. How do I go about doing this conversion. And i already checked out Sheldon Brown's website but does not show in detail steps.
I would like to have a clean look without using the derailleurs or chain tensioners, much like how a fixie track bike would look.
Any suggestions?
Unless you can get a magic gear ratio, you may not be able to get the clean look. If you have access to many sizes of chain ring and cog sizes, you may be able to get away with not using a tensioner.
Most track bikes and single-speed specific bikes have a horizontal slotted dropout or an eccentric bottom bracket to tension the chain using a variety of gears. Because your bike started out in life with a derailleur, you likely don't have either option and so will either need to put on a tensioner or play around with the gears so that you can make the chain fit at the right tension.
I suggest you forgo the clean look and buy this kit:
